Quantitative Concepts Lesson Ideas

  • Teach concepts in this order:
  • Teach one pair of concepts at a time.
  • Use real life objects as much as possible.
  • Use materials that are relevant and interesting to the students.
  • Make sure the objects you are using differ substantially enough to show the difference between the concept pair.
  • Teach concepts in a variety of contexts.
  • Give students the opportunity to build. When students build they use all types of materials: long/short, heavy/light, etc.
  • Make reference to concepts throughout the day (which line is longer?) and in a variety of situations to reinforce the importance of learning about these concepts.
  • Have students make quantitative concepts books. Dedicate one set of facing pages to each concept pair.
