Personal Data Lesson Ideas

  • Cut the letters in a student's name out of sand paper. Let them practice tracing the letters with their finger.
  • Write the student's name on a strip of paper and cut the letters apart. Challenge the student to put it back in order. 
    • Try this for the phone number and address too.
  • Let students practice typing their name, phone number, etc. on the computer.
  • Have students make letters and numbers out of pipe cleaners. Then use these letters and numbers to make the student's name or phone number.
    • Why not try this with play dough?
  • Have students practice printing personal data in the sand - or finger paint.
    • Why not write it in chalk on the chalkboard and then use a small sponge brush to trace and erase.
  • Provide dotted templates of the student's personal data. Have them trace. Do it again but leave out some letters for the student to fill in.
  • Can the student pick their phone number out of a list of 3 phone numbers?
  • Teach first names first.
  • Teach the difference between given names and nicknames.
  • Give reasons for learning personal data.
  • Label personal items.
  • Celebrate birthdays. Give the student a sticker that says how old they are – emphasize that this is their age.
  • Use telephones to teach.
  • Use full names when taking attendance so that students become more comfortable with their full name.
  • Stand up if your birthday is in January....
  • Use a simple map of your town – have students cut out small construction paper houses and glue them on to show where they live.
  • Build a model of your town.
  • Play Pass the House. Pass a construction paper house around a circle. When the music stops, the student holding the house should state their street address. Try this with a telephone too.
  • Role play what to tell someone if you are lost and need to get home.
  • Role play a 911 phone call where you need to tell the operator where you live.
  • Role play introducing yourself to someone else
  • Look up student’s names and their meanings
  • Make a poster with the letters in a student’s name ** look for examples online**
  • Create fill in the blanks sheets for students with their name, address and other personal information
  • Play a game where students roll the dice and have to tell you a piece of personal information that corresponds with the number that they rolled i.e. 1- house number, 2- street, 3- city, 4- province, 5- postal code, 6- full name
  • Have students address and mail letters to themselves – have them bring the letters to school when they receive them in the mail
  • Give scenarios and quiz students about whether the other people in the situations would need to have their phone number
  • Play stand up if... i.e. stand up if your birthday is in March, stand up if you live on Main Street
  • Have students make family trees to show all the members of their family.
  • Give family awards. Who has the biggest family, the most siblings, the tallest mother, etc. Discuss unique attributes of each family
  • Role play a situation where a student is sick or hurt and needs to contact their parents – have them practice giving appropriate information
  • Interview teachers around the school about their name, room number, grades taught, etc. Make posters and display.
