Sound Identification Lesson Ideas

  • Begin with sounds that can stretch like /s/ and /f/ before using short, stopping sounds like /p/ and /t/.
  • It is easier to identify and match initial sounds than final sounds. Middle sounds are most difficult.
  • Associate sounds with actions, objects or people - sssss says the snake.
  • Stress that the letters are visual shapes we can see and touch and that they stand for the sounds in words that we can hear.
