Grocery Shopping

  • Makes a grocery list based on what he/she has and needs (menu planning, checking cupboards)
  • Navigates the grocery store based on department (location of the bread, milk, meat, pharmacy, deli)
  • Uses coupons, flyers and other strategies to maximize budget (shopping from the bottom shelf for lower-priced items)
  • Makes appropriate purchasing decisions with regards to fresh items (meat, produce, bakery items)

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the procedure for and the importance of:
  • making a grocery list
  • finding items in the grocery store
  • reading labels and signs
  • putting away groceries
  • meal planning
  • food storage/ planning
  • figuring out the amounts of food to buy
  • taste testing in a store (when is it allowed)
  • judging ripeness/expiry dates - fruit, dairy, meat, bread
  • judging shelf life
  • making healthy choices when shopping
  • shopping the outside ring of the grocery store
  • using coupons
  • shopping sales
  • using flyers
  • buying by weight
  • buying bulk foods
  • finding deals - cost comparison
  • ordering at the meat counter - how to get what you want
  • using the pharmacy
  • using the florist
  • using point cards
  • self checkout
  • the express isle
  • reading receipts
  • good consumer skills in grocery shopping. Choose fruit and vegetables for freshness and check freshness dates on dairy and meat products.
