Sexual Health

The Ontario Curriculum documents cover Human Development and Growth. Here are some key issues you might also want to cover:
  • All body parts have a job to do. Private body parts have a job to do too.
  • Caring for your body is important.
  • Private body parts stay covered in public areas.
  • Private places are spaces I can go to be alone.
  • My body belongs to me.
  • No one can touch me without my permission.
  • No one can make me touch their private parts if I don't want to.
  • I can't touch anyone else without their permission.
  • If someone forces me to share my body when I don't want to, I should tell.
  • Certain topics are private.
  • Touch rules can change as I get older.
  • I should ask permission before I touch others.
  • Erections are common and happen to all boys.
  • Erections are private.
  • Ejaculations are private.
  • Menstruation is normal and means that my body is healthy and working as it should.
  • Menstruation is private.
  • I use a pad when I get my period. This is private.
  • Touching my private body parts(masturbation) feels good but is private.
  • If I want to touch my private body parts(masturbate), I should move to my private place.
  • If done safely and in private, Masturbation cannot hurt you.
  • I am an expert on how I feel. I need to share these feelings when I need help.
  • I have many different people in my life.
  • The type of relationship I have with someone helps me know what kind of touch is okay.
  • Sexual feelings become stronger during puberty.
  • When you have sexual feelings for another person it is called having a crush.
  • Crushes are normal.
  • Crushes can be one sided or mutual.
  • Dating is mutual - both people must be interested. If one person is not interested it is okay to say no.
  • After I get to know a person better my feelings may change.
  • I get to choose which relationships to continue and which to end.
  • Appropriate touching rules even apply to people I am dating.
  • Talking with my partner about boundaries is important.
  • My body gives me signals when I am feeling unsafe or need to be alert.
  • I should listen to and trust my body signals.
  • Most people are nice and will not hurt you.
  • There are people who may try to do sexual things that are against the law.
  • Most of these people are people you know and trust. 
  • When someone tricks you or forces you to do sexual things you don't want to do it's called sexual abuse.
  • Sexual abuse is against the law.
  • Nothing is so bad it can't be talked about.
  • If someone tries to get me to do something I will say no, get away and tell someone.
  • If the person I tell does not believe me I will keep telling till I am believed.
