Living Areas Maintenance

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the procedure for and the importance of:
  • dusting
  • vacuuming
  • organizing
  • sweeping
  • changing light bulbs
  • opening and closing windows
  • watering plants
  • replacing fuses or dealing with a circuit breaker
  • calling for a specialist (plumber, electrician) when the problem requires
  • emptying the garbage
  • replacing batteries
  • replacing vacuum cleaner bag
  • replacing trash liners
  • safely plugging in and unplugging appliances
  • adjusting window shades and drapes to light or temperature
  • adjusting the thermostat
  • adjusting radio or tv
  • securing the residence (at bedtime, when going out)
  • how to check smoke detectors to see if they are working and can replace the battery, if necessary. 
  • planning fire exits and emergency procedures
  • knowing where candles and flashlights are
  • using a fire extinguisher
  • knowing how to turn water off
  • knowing emergency telephone numbers
  • knowing where extra house key is located
  • painting a room
  • fixing holes in walls
  • getting rid of insects
  • cleaning walls
  • cleaning ceilings
  • cleaning window coverings

Appropriately use :
  • a stepladder
  • a hammer
  • a screwdriver
  • a wrench
  • pliers
  • a measuring tape/yardstick
