- Explain that some people like to be by themselves.
- Explain that there will be times when he/she will:
- Be alone
- Want to be alone
- Be with people who are busy doing their own work
- Reinforce gradually increasing intervals of time where the
student does a preferred activity independently.
- Reinforce gradually increasing intervals of time where the
student does a work task independently.
- Set up work times where student and peers are each doing
separate but related work jobs i.e. part of an assembly line.
- Teach strategies to improve task completion: jot notes, making lists of expectations, repeating expectations, and using task cards.
 - Involve students in writing the classroom rules. Take this one step further and discuss the possible consequences for not following the rules.
- Set up situations where students will need help. Be available to help when they ask appropriately.
- Remind students of situations where they do not need help. Encourage them to do these tasks by themselves.
- Ask students to help you build a structure to serve a
specific purpose. Encourage them to problem solve and come up with ideas.
- Give students responsibilities with classroom pets.
